Projector needs a sound system, any advice?

I am looking for a DVD/Theater System (preferably Samsung/Sony/Panasonic) to match up to one of two projectors: Sony Bravia VPL-AW10 or Mitsubishi HC1500. I’m really hoping to keep it under 250$, unless there is something really special/necessity in a more price model. I am also connecting my Xbox360 w/HD-DVD up to the projector via HDMI/Component.
Any advice for a frustrated home entertainment newbie will be much appreciated.

Well, in that price range you will have to accept that you are not going to get great sound or high quality components, BUT there are systems out there.
The link is to a listing from CNet of "Home Theater in a Box" systems. Some have ratings/reviews so you can see how the pros and consumers rate them. I didn’t filter by price, but you can do that.
I’d suggest NOT buying a system with an integrated DVD player. They can have a short life and it’s easier to replace an external unit (BUT make sure you can connect it!). With reasonable quality DVD players in the $30-$40 range there is no reason to get an integrated one.
Note that there are often sales on this type of equipment so I’d suggest keeping your eyes open. If you are comfortable with buying over the Internet you may be able to find a good deal on-line.
So, I’d suggest looking at a system that got a good rating (particularly for sound and features, but pay attention to inputs and outputs since you intend to connect to a projector) and lists for up to about $400. You may then be able to find it on sale for $250-$300.
I’m not going to suggest any specific model since ONLY YOU know what preferences you have.
One final hint … See the 2nd link for a good example of an online firm with a wide range of connectors, adapters and converters should you need to expand on connectivity.

go to Circuit City or Best Buy and play with the multitude of surround sound packages that are on display. You may want to have a system with a powered sub woofer. You may have to spend a little more for an onkyo or similar packaged system. If sound is important to you then it’s well worth spending a few additional dollars for a system that will provide long term enjoyment and pleasure for all.

I know this is alot more money than you want to spend… but this Onkyo system is one of the best Home Theater Box systems out there.

This system is right down your alley. It’s only 5.1 Now it doesn’t have the punch of the THX system. But don’t let that stop you from thinking about it. It’s a great starter system. With room to build on.
