‘JO Anime Review — BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad
This is JesuOtaku’s review of BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad. BECK is produced by Madhouse and available from Funimation. This review is unofficial and entirely silly to boot. All media is used for purposes of review and commentary under terms of fair use. Software I employ, if you’re curious: Sony Vegas for editing. It’s pretty smexy. I also use AutoGK and various AVS programs for encoding and converting different sources. They’re pretty cool, too. For once I’m actually happy with how this came out on a technical level. I was worried the sound mixing was going to be annoying because there’s a music bed in many places here rather than a dialogue bed, but it sounds great, and I changed the shadow on the text so that it looks better. (I should have done that a long time ago.) That’s my sister at the beginning there, and she’s awesome. There is nothing more to say. Oh, well, that and if there is one character in all of anime I feel is most like myself…it’s probably Maho from BECK. She’s a film lover, loves to sing, has the same taste in fashion as myself, speaks the same way, (Brina Palencia’s rendition of her, anyway,) and has an eerie amount of the same tics. I was continually freaked out by how much it felt like looking in a mirror when I watched scenes with Maho in them. Aaaaand I actually got a DVD of the show signed by Greg Ayres at a con. It’s pretty wicked. I’m a total nerd, yes. EDIT: I don’t know how accurate this is, but this has exactly 1000 views as of June 17! Cool!

i give this a 5. i was able to relate to koyuki very well plus i’m a music lover. this is the only anime that has really effected me emotionaly and mentally and probably the only anime that will always stay with me and one that i’ll allways remember. but she’s right about it being kind of slow paced, and it isn’t long enouhg (the manga is waaaaaaaaayyyy longer)

@dingaling24
you wont regret it, if your the guy who likes music and anime you’ll love this.
They even make small references to real bands such as Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

**SPOILERS BELOW!!!!**
While I love this anime to death, I have a couple of problems with it. One the ending was really terrible. i mean the whole anime felt like it was building up to the band going to America, and that kinda never happens. I thought at the very least the final few episodes would take us there, but NO they show a photo album? Cop-out! Also the romance with Maho never goes anywhere (although i guess this was kinda realistic).

**More Spoilers Below!**
I mean by the end they’re not dating? Wow…big let down. I thought SOMETHIng would happen. Also why the hell do they KEEP introducing new characters, start to devolp them, and then go NOWHERE with that, and then forget about the characters? That REALLY bugged me. Although yet again kinda realistic. Also i felt like I was missing some. Maho and her brother are from America? They barely touched on that, and what’s the deal with their past and stuff?

still even though I said all that i loved the series. The artwork was amazing, great animation, great characters, very grounded and realistic, and I loved the slice of life feeling. Also AMAZING music and top notch dub. Only why the hell did every song STOP playing? Like I only heard small parts of each song, and the SAME parts. I’d like to hear at least one full song…Still this is a great, unique show. Although as far as music/slife of life, I’m enjoying NANA much much more.

Who knew Super Buu could sing?
This was a solid anime and extremly unique. Definatly something to show ppl who think anime is all fanservice & powering up.

i want to say the anime was (insert complement of your choice) and it was a farily decient place to end the ANIME but its not the end of the story *gasp* thats right people the story continues in a 102 chapter manga. they follow the band around America to all thier gigs form small town bars to the house of a legend and it ends were it all first started but i’ll let you figue were out were that is yourself :)
*spoiler Alert*
stop reading now if you dont what to know
some 1 will die
silentnight909 on February 1, 2010 at 5:16 am

The anime only covers the first 12 volumes of Beck MCS. So yes it going to get cut short. If you want know what happens to the Band and the rest of the Characters of Beck MCS read the Manga because it goes well beyond the American Tour. It shows some stuff that happens right before,during and after the American Tour. I highly recommend it. It has 32 Volumes and 102 chapters plus and extra chapter. I would name the last chapter but I will give out spoilers if I do.

My Favorite Anime. period. I came across it when I started playing guitar.

Cool thing guy: I noticed 3 references to rock bands/performers. First is obviously Beck the dog is a reference to Beck the musician. The other two are on shirts. One says “pixis” which is probably a reference to The Pixies. The other has “Echo 25 bunny” which is most likely a reference to Echo and the Bunnymen

Intro = hilarity.
I could watch this over again just for that.

Best. Episode. Ever.
dingaling24 on April 27, 2010 at 8:53 pm
@artgeek707 actually if you look through the show you’ll see a whole bunch of references to western rock bands. in the opening theme, koyuki is wearing a ramones shirt. in the first episode he mentions steve vai, paul gilbert and a bunch of other guitar gods in a letter to his cousin. in the ending theme there are graffiti pictures kurt cobain and the sex pistols. believe me, the list goes for miles.

I’m learning to play the guitar *grade 2 -_-’* and beck really keeps me going along to learn the guitar *considering grade 1&2 are crappy, dunno ’bout grade 3 cuz that has solo-ing stuff (out of my league atm lol), but yeh this anime really kicked arse, great music and epic story, 5/5 from me :)
